Committees and the New Testament Church

Well, here comes another short post. One day I am going to sit down and write a long, thought provoking article about something that really needs to be written about…just don’t know when or what yet.All of that said, I’ve got a question for you New Testament scholars out there. Can you give me an idea as to where I might be able to find text supporting the notion of committees “governing” the local church. I just can’t seem to find it on my own…help!

There is a reason I’m asking this. I promise a future post with an explanation. Just hang with me on this one and share your thoughts (and scripture references).

  • I suppose that you could argue for Acts 6 and the choosing of the seven deacons to attend to the needs persons in the church. I suppose you could also argue that the disciples formed a committee that governed the early church in Jerusalem. The problem is that the deacons didn’t govern, they served. The apostles were picked by Jesus and not voted on by the church. The modern board and committee system found in many church has more of a relationship with the governance of the modern corporation than the church.

I’d say you’re not finding it because it isn’t a biblical model.
